From the series, Views from Another Island, of Monhegan Island, Maine. 2016/7
Williams focuses mostly on the coastal forest – a chaotic tangle of white bleached dead pine trees and twisted understory, with surprising glimpses of sea. He describes the island as having, “… spectacular rugged rock-bound scenery. The light has a diffused, milky quality due to its distance offshore.”
Monhegan Island is noted for its long association as a subject and destination for landscape artists. In this series, Williams is influenced by Alex Katz and Neil Welliver, whom he has long admired.
